Macau.China, 2 Sept – The Macau Open golf tournament returns this month after a one-year hiatus with a local record prize purse of US$750,000 (six million patacas), the co-organisers announced in a statement Thursday.
According to the statement, the Asian Tour-sanctioned event will be staged at the Macau Golf and Country Club in Coloane on September 15-18.
Macau last hosted the tournament in 2009 when Thailand ’s Thaworn Wiratchant claimed his 11th Asian Tour victory. The Macau Open was launched in 1998.
The statement pointed out that the local tournament has been won by many world stars, including England ’s Lee Westwood in 1999 and Scotland ’s Colin Montgomerie in 2003.
Other top names have competed in Macau previously, such as England ’s Nick Faldo and Fiji ’s Vijay Singh.
In a first for the tournament, the Macau Open will be beamed live over four rounds on the Asian Tour’s global television platform. The Macau Open is a full-field Asian Tour event.
The tournament is co-organised by the government-run Macau Sport Development Board (IDM) and its new business partner IMG Worldwide, a global sports, entertainment and media business headquartered in New York .(MacauNews/Sports)
