A surprising number of people don’t know how to swim. A 2019 Gallup poll of 150,000 people in 142 countries found that 55 percent of respondents could not “swim unassisted.”
Besides the obvious safety benefits of knowing how to stay afloat and move through the water, swimming is one of the best exercises out there. It improves cardio fitness and strength, all while having zero impact on your joints.
It’s also never too late to learn the sport. In fact, if you’ve spent a lifetime destroying your knees by jogging on pavements, or suffering from cycling-related back pain, you’ll love the pool.
Here are some places where you can learn to swim in Macao.
CHEswimming (澳門游泳課程)
“Not only knowing how to swim but knowing how to swim well” is the motto of CHEswimming. Its four certified coaches have represented Macao in swimming and diving and offer beginner-level instruction to anybody over the age of four.
All four strokes are taught: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl. Adult learners typically start with breaststroke and kids with crawl. Advanced classes are not offered, but if students want to refine their technique with a certain stroke, the coaches will help with that.
Instruction costs between 240 to 450 patacas per class and it usually takes eight to 12 classes for an adult to learn one stroke, the instructors say, but some need as many as 14 classes.

Chao x Swim (澳門游泳課程)
The coaching team at Chao x Swim consists of five full-time and four part-time swimming instructors. Head instructor and water sports enthusiast Chao ManKit has been teaching swimming for 19 years.
Kids and adults at the weekly classes are taught front crawl and breaststroke, with butterfly and backstroke reserved for more advanced students. Kids’ sessions involve plenty of play and fun in the water, helping younger students feel relaxed.
Instruction for children is priced at 180 patacas per session and 250 patacas for adults. Chao x Swim plans to soon offer an SSI swimming skill level certificate to beginners completing 25-metres freestyle within a certain time.

EasySwim Macao (澳門游泳課程)
EasySwim Macao provides training for anybody aged three and above.
The association has three different programs. The “swimming with fun” program is targeted at kids aged three and four to help them overcome their fear of water and enjoy swimming through simple techniques and pool games.
The basic swimming program teaches the fundamental strokes to kids aged around five or six.
Lastly, an advanced program targets older kids, teenagers and adults who know the basics but would like to improve their strokes and try out some of the techniques used by competitive swim teams.
Each class costs between 200 to 300 patacas per person. For more details, contact EasySwim Macao here.
