The second annual Macau International Queer Film Festival (MIQFF) will be screening at Lisboeta Macau’s Emperor Cinema from Friday until 6 April.

There’ll be two local productions amid the 14 feature films on offer, along with five short films from around the world – all testament to “the multifaceted nature of the queer community,” according to MIQFF.

Several of the films won awards at major film festivals last year, including Housekeeping for Beginners, a drama set in Macedonia’s capital that collected the Queer Lion trophy at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

MIQFF director Jay Sun told the Macau Post Daily that hosting the festival came with challenges, but he saw an “urgency” for its existence in a place like Macao – where queer culture is not as visible as it is in Hong Kong and the mainland. “This film festival is important not only to me, but I think to many people, especially this [LGBT] community,” he said.

More information about the festival, which debuted last year, can be found on its website.

MIQFF’s dates overlap with the inaugural Macao International Shorts Film Festival, scheduled to take place 23-30 March.
