A total of 12,719 people worked in Macau’s cultural industries last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Thursday.
Based on the city’s total workforce of 394,900 in the fourth quarter of last year, 3.2 percent of them worked in the cultural industries.
According to a bureau’s statistics on the city’s cultural industries in 2018, 2,246 entities were operating in the industries’ four core domains, namely creative design, cultural exhibitions and performances, art collection, and digital media last year, 155 more than in 2017.
The number of persons engaged in the industries rose 8.5 per cent year-on-year.
The cultural industries’ service receipts grew 1.9 per cent year-on-year to 7.18 billion patacas.
Gross value added (GVA), which measures the sector’s contribution to the economy, increased 9.7 percent to 2.6 billion patacas, accounting for 0.6 per cent of the total GVA of all economic activities in Macau last year.
The cultural industries’ gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) amounted to 290 million patacas, a year-on-year decline of 35.6 perbcent.
According to the bureau, 56.3 per cent of the cultural industries’ entities last year were engaged in creative design.
According to UNESCO, cultural industries (also known as “creative industries”) combine the creation, production, and distribution of goods and services that are cultural in nature and usually protected by intellectual property rights.
