The 2nd International Film Festival and Awards – Macau (IFFAM) kicked off on Friday with a star-studded red carpet event which included Hollywood star Jeremy Renner, but was marred by “equipment failure” for the screening of “Rashomon” on Saturday.

The festival’s opening ceremony took place at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) with “Paddington 2” as the opening film, which had its world premiere in London on November 5.

This year’s festival is themed “A New Avenue to the World of Films”. Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, who is also the president of IFFAM Organising Committee said at the opening ceremony that the festival’s competition section spotlights first- and second-time feature film directors to inspire young industry professionals to soar higher.

“From around the world, we have selected a range of remarkable films highly worthy of the audiences’ appreciation, with our dedication to offering a springboard for young filmmakers to forge their careers in the industry,” she said.

According to IFFAM, the festival, which runs until Thursday, features a total of 48 films from the East and West, as well as 16 local films, with the Macau Cultural Centre, the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre and the Cinematheque・Passion as the three screening venues.

However, the screening of the film “Rashomon” on Saturday at Cinematheque・Passion had to be rescheduled “due to equipment failure”, the IFFAM Organising Committee said in a statement.

“After the repairs, the equipment was restored in the early morning of the 10th of December,” the statement said, adding that the new screening of “Rashomon” would be announced “at a later time”.
