Macao’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) has started construction of the northern segment of the East Line, according to local media reports

When completed, the section will be 2.9 kilometres in length and will consist of three underground stations linked by tunnels.

Construction will be jointly completed by a consortium of 16 companies, including China Civil Engineering and China Railway Group, and is expected to cost between approximately 4.4 billion to 5.1 billion patacas.

When completed in 2028, the 7.7 kilometre East Line will pass through the Border Gate area, the coastline facing Avenida Norte do Hipódromo and Avenida da Ponte da Amizade, as well as New Urban Zone A. It will then link to New Urban Zone E in Taipa via an undersea tunnel before going onwards to the Taipa Ferry Terminal.

Meanwhile, authorities in Hengqin revealed last month that they were studying the feasibility of connecting Macao to the nation’s high-speed rail network, via a railway line that would integrate with the LRT system.

The 2.2-kilometre Hengqin-Macao LRT connection is set to be completed in September 2024.
