The government has fenced off 11 endangered shipyards in Coloane’s Lai Chi Vun village amid concerns over the upcoming typhoon season.
One of the shipyard owners says he’s shocked as the government had not informed them in advanced.
Wong Seng Ip also calls on the authority to approach them more proactively to discuss the future development of the area.
After being abandoned for decades, the endangered shipyards in Coloane’s Lai Chi Vun village are now reaching their breaking point.
The Marine and Water Bureau and the Land and Public Works Bureau jointly decided to fence off these 11 shipyards that could collapse at any time.
The Marine Bureau explains that the reason behind this move is to ensure public safety as the typhoon season is approaching the city.
One of the shipyard owners, Wong Seng Ip, says he is shocked as he claims that the government had not informed them before taking any action.
“Well I was not informed and have no idea when they decided to fence off the area. We do agree if the government wants to develop this area as everybody’d love to see this area become more beautiful”, Mr. Wong said.
Wong Seng Ip says he and other ship-owners are absolutely happy to discuss with the government, but he slams the authority for ignoring them.
Another shipyard owner, who refused to be filmed, says he has yet to receive any reply from the government after submitting an application of maintenance of the shipyard.
