Data released by the Public Security Police has revealed a new post-pandemic arrivals record for the number of visitors recorded in a single day.
According to media reports, 109,196 visitors arrived in Macao yesterday as the Labour Day Golden Week holiday got underway. The previous high – according to finance secretary Lei Wai Nong – was around 98,000 visitors, recorded on 15 April. Some 96,000 arrivals were meanwhile recorded on 18 March.
The numbers compare with the 159,000 daily visitors arrivals record in Macao during the same period in 2019 – the last year before the pandemic.

The local travel sector has high hopes that the Labour Day holiday – customarily observed in mainland China from 29 April to 3 May – will accelerate Macao’s emergence from the lean years of Covid-19.
Analysts warn, however, that a shortage of labour is preventing Macao from taking maximum advantage of the rebound in demand, with hotels not able to offer a full inventory of rooms and cutting back on services.
Visitors have also been upset by the spike in room rates resulting from the scarcity of accommodation.
