Macao’s population remained unchanged at 682,500 at the end of the second quarter, the same as on 31 March, according to the latest figures from the Statistics and Census Bureau.
However, Macao’s population fell 0.4 per cent year-on-year. At the end of the second quarter of 2020, Macao’s population, counting both residents and non-resident workers, stood at 685,400.
At the end of June, females accounted for 53.3 per cent of the population.
A total of 1,299 live births were delivered from April to the end of June, an increase of 126 quarter-to-quarter; 110.9 boys were born for every 100 girls.
Mortality dropped by 35 quarter-to-quarter to 554. Cancer was the main underlying cause of death, accounting for 38 per cent of the total.
The number of non-resident workers fell by 852 quarter-to-quarter to 172,261. Most non-resident workers are mainland Chinese, Filipinos, Vietnamese and Nepalese.
A total of 809 marriage registrations were recorded in the second quarter, down by 164 from the previous quarter.
Based on Macao’s land area of 33 square kilometres, the special administrative region’s population density amounted to 20.681 per square kilometre at the end of June – one of the world’s highest.
Since the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region in December 1999 the city’s land area has grown by 38.5 per cent, while its population has increased 59.3 per cent.
