The Government Information Bureau (GCS) will further facilitate communication between the government and the press, according to the new GCS director, Inês Chan Lou. She took office on Wednesday, with Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng administering the oath of office.
According to the statement released by GCS, maintaining close communication with the press would be Chan’s priority. To do so, she plans to visit local newsgroups and journalists’ associations to gain an understanding of how to fully provide support for the industry’s development.
The bureau will also increase the use of new technologies and new media platforms to promote official information to the press and the public, Chan added.
Chan also said she would lead her team to provide “stronger contribution to the efforts to integrate Macao in an active way within national development, highlighting the city’s success stories regarding the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle.”
She holds two bachelor’s degrees, one in engineering and one in science. She also has a Master’s degree in public administration – with a major in international relations – offered jointly by the University of Macau and Portugal’s National Institute of Public Administration.
She joined the Macao civil service in 1990, first employed in the Cartography and Cadastre Bureau (DSCC) before moving to MGTO. While at DSCC, she was tasked with the development of information and technology systems.
Before her new appointment, Chan was the head of the Licensing and Inspection Department of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) from 2001 to 30 June 2020. She was also involved in research and planning, information technology, and administration and finance at MGTO. On occasion, she also worked as a functional head or department head.
From January until the end of June, Chan had attended over 100 press conferences about Macao’s novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation at the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre.
