Macao’s 108 hotels and guesthouses recorded 116,000 guests last month, a year-on-year decline of 89.9 per cent, the Statistics and Service Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, guests from the Chinese mainland (71,000) and Hong Kong (10,000) both decreased by over 90 per cent. Guests’ average length of stay rose by 0.7 night to 2.1 nights.
The average occupancy rate of guestrooms fell by 77.8 percentage points year-on-year to 12.3 per cent.
The statement pointed out that data on Macao’s so-called “quarantine hotels” were not included in the hotel sector’s statistics for last month.
In the first five months, guestrooms’ average occupancy rate stood at 30.4 per cent, a drop of 61.0 percentage points. Guests in hotels and guesthouses declined by 70.7 per cent to 1.69 million. Guests’ average length of stay increased by 0.2 night to 1.7 nights.
The statement pointed out that due to the ongoing COVID-19 prevention quarantine measures for arrivals, there were no package tour visitors in Macao last month, while the number of residents using the services of travel agencies for outbound travel was just 100.
Between January and May, 253,000 package tour visitors were recorded, a 93.9 per cent year-on-year drop. The number of residents who used the services of travel agencies for outbound travel decreased by 88.3 per cent to 88,000 in the five-month period.
