Macao’s five hospitals provided a total of 1,628 inpatient beds last year, up by 24 year-on-year, while their number of inpatients rose 3.9 per cent to 62,000, with the average hospital stay up by 0.2 days to 7.4 days, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Thursday.
The occupancy rate of in-patient beds grew 3.9 percentage points to 78.3 per cent.
Outpatient attendance rose 5.8 per cent to 1.89 million, of which consultations in Internal Medicine (312,000) accounted for 16.5 per cent, followed by those in Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation (252,000), which took up 13.3 per cent.
Emergency attendances rose 5.2 per cent to 489,000, with those in the Macao peninsula (383,000) and Taipa (107,000) increasing by 5.9 per cent and 3.0 per cent respectively.
There were about 20,000 surgical operations last year, up by 6.3 per cent year-on-year. Surgical operations in Ophthalmology (3,997) rose 40.4 per cent, representing a growth of over 40 per cent for two consecutive years.
Macao had 716 primary health care establishments such as public health centres and private clinics last year. The total number of consultations increased 4.5 per cent to 4.4 million, of which consultations in government health establishments grew 4.7 per cent to 939,000 and consultations in private clinics increased 4.4 per cent to 3.17 million.
Consultations in General Practice (1.2 million) accounted for 29.8 per cent of the total, followed by those in Traditional Chinese Medicine (1.14 million) and Stomatology/Odontology (277,000), accounting for 27.8 per cent and 6.7 per cent respectively.
A total of 416,000 doses of vaccine were administered in hospitals and primary health care establishments last year, up by 9.5 per cent. Flu shots totalled 161,000 doses.
The number of blood donations rose by 3.9 per cent to 15,441, with 3,369 first-time blood donations. A total of 11,150 people donated blood last year, a year-on-year increase of 3.6 per cent.
According to data provided by the Health Bureau (SSM), there were 1,808 doctors and 2,491 nurses in Macao last year, up by 3.1 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively year-on-year. The number of doctors and nurses per 1,000 population was 2.7 and 3.7 respectively.
At the end of the first quarter, Macao’s population stood at 696,100, according to DSEC data.
