A pair of 7-year-old golden snub-nosed monkeys at the Seac Pai Van Park, in Coloane, welcomed a new member of their family on February 14 – Valentine’s Day.
According to the Government Information Bureau (GCS), this is the first infant born to ‘San Hei’ (三黑) and ‘Eleven’ (十一).
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) is now monitoring their health from a distance so as to avoid disturbing the nursing mother and baby. Both are in stable condition.
Further detailed health checks will be conducted when evaluation is feasible.
When conditions permit, IAM shall arrange the baby’s introduction to the public. Relevant information will be announced in due time.
The golden snub-nosed monkey is a unique species in China, a national first-class protected rare and endangered species. Covered in golden fur with a pale blue face and iconic crooked nose, they mostly inhabit dense alpine forests.
On loan from the Municipal Services Department of the Qingdao Wildlife Rescue Centre in the port city of Qinhuangdao in Hebei province, the pair of golden snub-nosed monkeys have been on display at the Seac Pai Van Park since October 25, 2017.
The golden snub-nosed infant will be returned to the Qingdao Wildlife Rescue Centre after it reaches 24 months.
Seac Pai Van Park also has a pair of giant pandas with twin babies and a pair of red pandas.
The park resumed operation on February 20 after being closed due to the government’s COVID-19 measures.
