Macau, China, 27 May -Macau’s hotels, restaurants and similar businesses employed 53,921 people at the end of March, accounting for 16.1 percent of Macau ’s total workforce, according to figures released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) Thursday.
While 36,163 people were employed by the hospitality industry, 18,758 worked in restaurants.
The hotel and restaurant sector reported 4,686 vacancies at the end of the first quarter – accounting for about 52 percent of Macau ’s total number of unemployed at that time.
The number of people working in the sector was up 11.7 percent year-on-year.
In March, the average earnings of full-time employees rose 7.3 percent year-on-year to 10,700 patacas. Housekeeping staff earned an average of 6,570 patacas in March.
While hotel staff’s average earnings amounted to 12,290 patacas in March, restaurant workers took home 7,340 patacas.
Some 58 percent and 43.1 percent of the hotel and restaurant sector’s vacancies required applicants to speak Putonghua and English, respectively, according to The Macau Post Daily.(MacauNews/Tourism)
