A 69-year-old flu patient died yesterday shortly after his hospitalisation, but the cause of death still remains to be determined, the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement Wednesday.
According to the statement, the local man came down with cough and expectoration on Monday. When he failed to answer his family’s telephone calls yesterday morning, they called an ambulance to transfer him to the private Kiang Wu Hospital where he arrived without heart beat.
Cardio-respiratory reanimation carried out immediately proved successful. A test confirmed that he suffered from Type A influenza.
The patient was transferred to the emergency department of the public Conde de Sao Januário Hospital Centre where he was diagnosed with double pneumonia, heart failure and other conditions. He passed away at around noon yesterday. The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy. The patient had not been vaccinated against seasonal 2018-19 flu.
According to the statement, since September last year 46 cases of flu complicated by pneumonia and other complications have been confirmed, one of them fatal, which was an 86-year-old man.
