The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) said in a statement Wednesday that the number of pupils of the city’s non-tertiary education has increased for five consecutive years.
According to the statement, the bureau expects the number of pupils for the upcoming school year 2018/19 – which starts next week – to reach 80,556, a 1.9 percent increase from 79,092 in the previous school year 2017/18.
The statement said that the number of pupils will have increased for five consecutive school years, from the “lowest value” in school year 2013/14.
For the upcoming school year, the number of pupils in kindergartens is expected to stand at 18,846, a 0.9 percent decrease from the previous school year, the statement said. The number of pupils in primary schools is expected to reach 33,238, an eight percent increase, while the number of secondary school pupils is expected to amount to 27,662, a three percent decrease, according to the statement.
According to the statement, there will be 77 schools operating in the new school year 2018/19.
