Casino staff petition govt over Wynn ‘tolerating’ illegal smoking

Several Wynn Macau casino workers, accompanied by lawmakers-cum-unionists Ella Lei Cheng I and Leong Sun Iok as well as members of the Macau Gaming Enterprises Staff Association (MGESA), Thursday petitioned Chief Executive Chui Sai On, urging the government to ensure that gaming operators always strictly obey the anti-smoking law and, consequently, always ensure that gamblers do not smoke in no-smoking areas on their premises.

The association is an affiliate of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, of which Lei and Leong are board members.

The petitioners slammed Wynn Macau for allegedly “tolerating” gamblers smoking in no-smoking areas. They also urged the government to announce details about the officially-approved smoking lounges and smoking areas in the gaming areas of the city’s six gaming operators, so that members of the public can know in which areas in casinos customers are allowed to smoke.

According to Lei, the casino workers also told her union that Wynn Macau told its casino workers not to tell offenders to stop smoking in no-smoking areas. She said that the company reportedly criticised the staff members who did not follow their company’s alleged instruction.

The Health Bureau said in a statement Thursday that since its multiple inspections of gaming areas at Wynn Macau since October, its inspectors had not discovered any illegally set up smoking areas.

There was no immediate public reaction by Wynn Macau to the petition.
