Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has commenced a 7-day state visit to China, focused on securing necessary funding for key parts of the economy, according to a media report.

The state visit, scheduled from 16 to 22 April at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, represents the Mozambican leader’s first trip to China since he assumed office in January 2025. The primary purpose is to mobilise financing for major structural initiatives seen as crucial for revitalising the nation’s economy.

These initiatives target high impact economic and social projects within strategic sectors such as infrastructure, mining, energy, and agriculture, all viewed as essential foundations for accelerating economic expansion and diversifying Mozambique’s economic base.

Beyond financial concerns, the trip is intended to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that exists between the two nations. Maputo is looking to reinforce its political and financial alliances, while also consolidating political and diplomatic cooperation with Beijing. This includes aligning positions on major global matters, including United Nations reform, climate change, and the increasing influence of the Global South.

On the Chinese side, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that the visit is expected to strengthen mutual political trust and intensify bilateral cooperation, positioning it within China’s wider strategy for cementing China-Africa relations.

Meetings are planned for President Chapo with senior Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
