Macao’s delegation is delivering a powerful showing at the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th Special Olympic Games of China, collecting medals across athletics, bocce, softball and field events in Guangdong and Macao. According to the delegation, the team has accumulated four gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals over two days of Special Olympics athletics competition held in Zhongshan.
14-year-old sprinter Wong Tak Hong claimed one of the team’s biggest early victories, winning the men’s 12-15 age group 100m final in 14.12 seconds. The young athlete said he was “particularly happy” with the result after training daily in the lead-up to the Games.
Meanwhile, another younger Macao representative with the same name in English transliteration, Wong Tak Hong, also secured silver in the men’s 8-11 age group 50m sprint with 9.38 seconds, demonstrating his versatility across divisions.
In the women’s events, Chan Hio Lam won silver in the 50m (Group 2) and standing long jump, while Chang Hoi Iao earned bronze in both disciplines.
Wong Hou meanwhile captured gold in the men’s 16-21 long jump after defeating Xinjiang’s Batu Zaya with a leap of 5.58 metres. At the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, Macao’s Ng Sin Tong placed seventh in the women’s shot put F20 final.

Across the wider Games, athletes from around the country produced remarkable achievements. Hubei defeated Guizhou 3-2 in the hearing-impaired mixed team badminton final at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, capturing the first gold medal of the Macao competition zone. Chinese-language reports highlighted key performances from Hubei duo Ding Yibo and Zhang Hengyan, alongside national team players Jiang Jialei and Song Shaoyang, who delivered a dramatic comeback in men’s doubles.
Several results in the athletics field surpassed world paralympics records. Jiangsu athlete Zou Lijuan broke the women’s para F34 discus world record with 23.29m, while Liaoning’s Li Yingli set the F38 shotput para world record at 13.12m. Paralympic champion Shi Yiting stormed to victory in the women’s 400m T36 with a para world-record 1:05.64, later telling reporters that running has made her “more resilient, unafraid of difficulties at any time.”
Canoeing was a success as well, with Yunnan’s Zhong Yongyuan, a Paris Paralympic bronze medallist, winning the women’s 500m VL3 in 2:36.839. In blind football, Tianjin’s Fan Hailin spoke candidly about overcoming fear and doubt to compete, saying, “After bumping into things twice and falling twice, you’re no longer afraid.”
