Restoring the Charm of Macao’s Hotel Central

PUBLISHED

Macao’s landmark 95-year-old Hotel Central, once the tallest hotel in the Portuguese-speaking world, has been revived after years of disrepair. The 11-story building, Macao’s first skyscraper and first with an elevator, was a local icon for decades before falling into decline. In 2016, 65-year-old Simon Sio, founder of Macao’s Lek Hang Group, purchased the hotel for over 1.5 billion patacas and has invested over 400 million patacas to restore the historic property to its former grandeur.
