Train services between Guangzhou South Station and Hengqin Station began operating yesterday, according to reports by multiple local news outlets

The new C76 service is expected to offer greater convenience to passengers travelling between Guangzhou and Macao. Prior to its commencement, local residents travelling to the provincial capital by rail could only go via Zhuhai Station.

“The next step is for the railroad authorities to continue increasing the number of train services, which will promote the deepening of contact between the mainland and Macao,” said Hengqin’s station master, Liu Dong Jie, in an interview with local media outlet TDM.

Passengers interviewed by Macao’s public broadcaster said the new service was convenient and less crowded.

According to China Railway, there are a total of 16 trains operating between Guangzhou South Station and Hengqin Station, with eight trains departing from each station daily. Stops include Zhuhai, Mingzhu and Zhongshan stations.

The whole journey takes a little over one and a half hours, with trains scheduled approximately every 90 minutes.

The service is part of China’s new railway operating plan, which is partly designed to improve connections between cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

In addition to the new route, a new intercity train service between Hengqin and Zhuhai has been launched, with a total of ten trains scheduled between the stations each day.
