A steady stream of diesel vehicle owners have applied for the scrapping subsidy – worth from MOP 25,000 to MOP 115,000 – since its launch last month.

The Environmental Protection Bureau said it had received 47 applications for the scheme and that the Environmental Protection and Energy Conservation Fund has completed assessing 36 of them.

Applications for the scheme, which started on 15 September, will run until 15 March next year.

Each eligible vehicle owner will benefit from a subsidy ranging from MOP 25,000 to MOP 115,000 depending on their vehicle’s type and specification.

The scheme covers vehicles that were first registered on or before 31 December 2002 and had still not been deregistered before the scheme’s announcement.

Owners are required to remove their vehicles from Macao within 180 days after they have been notified that their application for a subsidy has been approved. In addition, they are also required to deregister the respective vehicles with the Transport Bureau during the 180-day period. Owners will only receive the subsidy after they have fulfilled all the requirements.

The bureau reaffirmed that the subsidy scheme does not require beneficiaries to purchase new vehicles after scrapping their old diesel vehicles.

It aims to encourage owners to scrap their old diesel vehicles that produce a higher level of emissions.

Eligible vehicle owners who intend to benefit from the subsidy scheme are advised to submit their applications as soon as possible, The Macau Post Daily reported.

The government launched in March this year a MOP 3,500 subsidy scheme for owners to replace their old motorcycles with new electric ones. Its application scheme will end on 31 December.
