Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng pointed out that a 5G network covering the whole city would need an investment of over MOP 3 billion (US$377.1 million) on a Q&A session in the legislature’s hemicycle Tuesday afternoon.

Ho said that the disadvantage of 5G is that the signal from a base station only coves a small area, and therefore a 5G network requires a large number of such stations.

Ho said that for a 5G network to cover the whole city of Macao, it is estimated that 500 macro-base stations and 2,000 micro-base stations would be needed, requiring an investment of over MOP 3 billion.

Ho said he expected Macao’s future 5G network to be applied in teaching and medical services first.
