Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On arrived on Sunday for a five-day official visit to Portugal at the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

According to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), Chui will also meet Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and co-chair a meeting of the Macau-Portugal Joint Commission with Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva.

According to a recent report by local government-owned broadcaster TDM, Costa is expected to attend the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Countries in Macau on October 11-12. The TDM report said that Premier Li Keqiang was also expected to attend the forum overseen by the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing.

The GCS statement said that Chui and his delegation would also meet local students in Portugal.

According to the statement, the visit also aims to strengthen Macau’s role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking world.

Chui’s delegation includes his chief-of-cabinet, O Lam, GCS Director Victor Chan Chi Ping and Fung Sio Weng, head of the Protocol, Public Relations and External Affairs Office.

The delegation is slated to return to Macau on Thursday.

It is Chui’s second official visit to Portugal since assuming office in 1999. Unlike his first trip in 2010 when he was accompanied by two policy secretaries, this one doesn’t include any of his five policy secretaries. (Macau News / The Macau Post Daily)
