Deputy Director of the Economic Bureau (DSE) Lau Wai Meng was appointed Tuesday as the new president of the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM).

The one-year appointment of Lau Wai Meng was published on the Official Gazette of Macao on Tuesday.

The new IPIM president will replace Irene Lau Kuan Va at the helm of the institute.

Lau Wei Meng started his career as a civil servant in 1990 in the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).

Irene Lau was appointed president of IPIM in May last year.

She had been acting president of the troubled institute since October 2018 after Jackson Chang (aka Cheong Chou Weng) was removed from his post for his alleged involvement in a corruption case involving the granting of residency permits to purported investors and professionals.

Chang, who has been remanded in custody, will stand trial for bribe-taking and a string of other crimes next Thursday, alongside ex-IPIM official Glória Batalha Ung and a number of other co-defendants.
