Macau, Chin,a 7 Dec – Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On said Tuesday that his government would continue to respect the freedom of the press and support the local media.

He made the pledge to the media after visiting the Museum of the Holy House of Mercy’s new exhibition hall, The Macau Post Daily reports today.

Chui’s promise came after a reporter’s question on his opinion concerning the fact that local media groups have starkly different views on whether the city’s 20 year old Press Law and Broadcasting Law should be amended,

Chui insisted that his government does not have a predefined position on how to amend the two laws

“As the laws have been in place for such a long period, [the government] has to study which part of the laws should be altered or what should be added to he laws …. We have no predefined position,” Chui said, adding that the Government Information Bureau (GCS) will meet each media association in turn to listen to their opinions on how to amend the laws.

Macau has six registered media associations.

“During the consultation period (for the two law amendments), I hope each media group will express their opinions,” Chui said, adding, “We will continue to respect the freedom of the press… (and) support and give protection to Macau ’s media.”(MacauNews/Politics)
