Addressing a Q&A session in the legislature’s hemicycle on Monday, Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak said that the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras was necessary to keep the city secure.
Wong made the remarks when answering a question by directly-elected lawmaker-cum-civic leader Ho Ion Sang, on the first of a two-day Q&A session about his portfolio’s policy guidelines for next year.
The government said last year that the installation of 1,620 CCTV cameras was expected to be completed in four phases.
The installation of the first phase of CCTV cameras was started at the end of last year. The first phase – 219 cameras – came into operation in September.
The cameras in the first phase are located in the areas around the city’s various border checkpoints.
The cameras in the second phase will be on all major roads.
In the second and third phases, 263 and 338 cameras will be installed. A total of 800 cameras are slated to be set up in the fourth phase.
On Monday’s plenary session, Ho asked Wong whether the police would allocate more CCTV cameras in the city’s old quarters and crime black spots.
Wong also said there was a consensus in civil society for the need to install CCTV cameras in the city.
