The local government announced Tuesday that the Macau Unitary Police Service (SPU) will carry out a large-scale anti-terrorism exercise at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Cotai Thursday afternoon in collaboration with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macau Garrison.

According to a SPU statement Tuesday, the exercise named “Spirited Dog” will simulate that a terrorist attack using chemical and radiological weapons occurs during a large-scale concert.

The exercise will simulate that terrorists have injured several people and a large number of people are taken hostage, according to the statement.

Officers from the Macau Customs Service, Public Security Police (PSP), Judiciary Police (PJ) and Fire Services Bureau (CB), and officials from the Health Bureau (SSM), Government Information Bureau (GCS) and Sports Bureau (ID), will take part in the exercise, according to the statement.

The statement said that the exercise is to test the police force’s ability to coordinate with officers of the local PLA garrison and officials of the relevant local government entities if a terrorist attack occurs. The exercise will help the police assess whether their anti-terrorism plans that they have set up are effective to tackle terrorist attacks, according to the statement.

Traffic restriction measures will be implemented between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow in the roads around Macau East Asian Games Dome with the aim of ensuring that the exercise will take place safely and smoothly, the statement said.
