Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro is set to arrive in Macao on 10 September, according to a report in Jornal Tribuna de Macau, which said it was informed by Montenegro’s office. The visit to the Macau SAR is part of a broader tour of China, the paper said.

During his time in Macau, Montenegro will reportedly meet with Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai and visit the Portuguese School, a common stop for Portuguese officials. A reception for the Portuguese community is also on the itinerary.

The upcoming visit follows an announcement in June by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who stated that Montenegro would include Macao in his China trip. Rebelo de Sousa had initially been slated to visit Macau for 10 June celebrations but later indicated that the prime minister would go in September instead.

“He has a visit to China that also overlaps with his trip to Macao,” Rebelo de Sousa explained at the time, confirming he would not visit Macao during his second and final presidential term, which concludes on 9 March next year.

Montenegro’s visit coincides with the recent postponement of Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai’s official trip to Portugal and Spain.

Originally scheduled for 16 to 20 September, Sam’s visit has been delayed without a new date being announced. This marks the second postponement for Sam Hou Fai’s inaugural overseas trip since taking office as the head of Macao’s government on 20 December 2024.
