The People´s Liberation Army (PLA) garrison in Macau early Wednesday completed its 19th troop rotation and leave the Special Administrative Region.

According to a statement by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) the  rotation was carried out in accordance with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Garrisoning the Macau Special Administrative Region and by order of the Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing.

According to the statement, the rotation involved a convoy of military vehicles which departed from the Macau Garrison barracks in Zhuhai and entered Macau through the Lotus Flower Bridge checkpoint. The statement said that the total number of military personnel and equipment remained the same as before. However, it did not reveal the number.

According to the statement, the troop rotation was completed at the PLA Macau Garrison barracks in Taipa.

A solemn ceremony was held at the Taipa barracks to mark the rotation.

Garrison Commander Major General Liao Zhengrong praised the departing PLA troops for their performance during the past year. He also encouraged the newly arrived troops to uphold their duties, closely follow the “one country, two systems” principle, and continuously contribute to Macau’s long-term stability and prosperity.

In 2017, in the aftermath of the deadly Super Typhoon Hato, upon Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On’s request and with the approval of the central government, the local PLA garrison deployed troops to assist the city in its disaster relief operation. The PLA troops’ disaster relief performance was highly praised by local residents who described the soldiers who removed tonnes of rubbish and debris as “heroes”.
