Details of the first phase of government restructuring will be announced later this year, Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau (SAFP) Acting Director Kou Peng Kuan said on Tuesday in a reply to an interpellation submitted by lawmaker Si Ka Lon.

Si submitted a written interpellation in April, asking for more information about the promised restructuring of government bodies and the elimination of government-appointed council secretariats.

Kou responded that the government was gradually improving its structure, adding that the government was reviewing the functions of the Legal Affairs Bureau (DSAJ) and the Law Reform and International Law Bureau (DSRJDI). He also said that the government’s restructuring concept would be revealed later this year.

The government said last year it was determined to streamline the public administration.

In addition, Kou also responded to an interpellation put forward by lawmaker Zheng Anting about civil servants’ benefits. While he said there was no clear definition of what constitutes “grassroots civil servants”, the government would provide the necessary help to them, based on their salaries. Kou added that the government planned to introduce three new measures to serve their needs, including subsidies for child care. He said the government was in the early stages of analysing how to implement the measures. (macaunews/macaupost)
