Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau Director Zheng Xiaosong says that he will further promote and enhance exchanges and cooperation between Macau and the mainland. Zheng also says he believes that Macau will be more prosperous with the strong backing of the central government.

“Zheng made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Sunday after attending a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate National Day.

According to the Macau Post Daily, Zheng said that he visited Macau several times before he was appointed liaison chief last month, adding that he was impressed by the city’s “beauty” and its “cosy” environment.

Zheng said that despite having taken up office for just 10 days, he felt “deeply” the stability and harmony of Macau’s civil society as well as the enormous achievements in its economic development since the city’s return to the motherland, adding that the situation is “vividly” demonstrating the successful implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle.

The State Council announced Zheng’s appointment on September 22, replacing Wang Zhimin as the central government’s top official in Macau. Wang now heads the Central People’s Government’s Liaison Office in Hong Kong.

Zheng, 58, said he believed that the continued success of the “one country, two systems” principle can be achieved as long as the local government administers the city in strict adherence with the Macau Basic Law and concentrates on economic development and the improvement of residents’ livelihoods.

Zheng also said that his office would comprehensively carry out its duties and fully support the local government and the chief executive in administering Macau in accordance with the law, pledging that his office would also stay in close contact with the various segments of civil society and enhance exchanges and cooperation between Macau and the mainland.
