The Commissioner of the Commission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macau, Shen Beili, says she hopes that the local media will tell the world about Macau’s successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

Shen, who heads the ministry’s local office, made the remarks in a speech on Friday during a seminar attended by senior representatives of Macau’s media companies.

About 60 representatives from the city’s Chinese-, Portuguese- and English-language media companies and the central government’s media organisations posted to Macau attended the seminar at the building of the commission in Zape.

The two deputy commissioners, Wang Dong and Yuan Hengge, and Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) Director Victor Chan Chi Ping also attended the seminar, which also marked the upcoming Chinese New Year. This year, the first day of the Chinese New Year of the Pig falls on February 5.

The ministry’s local office was established on 20 December, 1999 – the establishment day of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR).

Shen, who was posted to Macau last year, said that for 20 years the commission has actively informed Macau compatriots about the nation’s foreign affairs and shared information about the commission’s diplomatic activities with the local public in a timely manner.

Shen also said that last year the commission continued to assist the MSAR authorities in their external exchanges and cooperation projects, and also upgraded its public diplomacy information activities and improved its consular protection and services,

Shen, 55, said that the current international situation is complicated and the international landscape is undergoing profound changes. She also said that the world is facing major changes that did not occur in the past 100 years. China is increasingly approaching the centre of the world stage and major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics has continuously made new progress, the commissioner said.

Shen said that she hoped that Macau’s media would pay more attention to the nation’s diplomacy and its diplomatic activities related to Macau, and make more contributions to the promotion of Macau people’s understanding of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics.

Shen also said she was looking forward to seeing that the local media would continue to tell the world about the “story” of Macau’s successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle in an objective, fair and multifaceted manner, as well as to gather residents’ views, reflect public opinion, and actively provide the local government with different opinions and suggestions.
