Veteran directly-elected lawmaker-cum-businessman Chan Meng Kam will run with local community leader Si Ka Lon in the legislative election on September 15.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a reception of the 5th anniversary of the People’s Alliance for the Development of Macau, Si Ka Lon, who heads the association, said that he would be the number-two candidate on Chan’s ticket.
Chan, a prominent member of Macau’s sizeable Fujianese immigrant community, has been voted in as a directly-elected lawmaker since 2005; he is also a member of the government’s top advisory body – the 10-member Executive Council (ExCo).
The People’s Alliance for the Development of Macau (APIM) was established in 2008 by local Fujianese community leaders including Chan and Ung Choi Kun, a directly-elected lawmaker who was Chan’s running-mate in the last two legislative elections in 2005 and 2009.
However, Ung previously announced that he would not seek re-election.
Talking to reporters, Si pointed out that he has worked full time for the association since 2011.
“Before I was a businessman in fields related to the aviation and logistic industries. In 2009 I retired and started working for youth associations,” Si was quoted by The Macau Post Daily as saying, adding that work experience obtained in various associations had given him a better understanding of what residents really need.
He said he believed that competition in the upcoming legislative election will be very strong.
“We are quite confident [about the upcoming election]… we’ll try our best to obtain more public support,” Si said, adding that if he was elected he would fight for the benefits and rights of the grassroots and young people.(macaunews)
