Lawmaker-cum-educator Chan Hong said Sunday a better way to promote the Macau Basic Law was to make it “more lively” for schoolchildren to digest and understand the city’s mini-constitution.
Chan, who heads the influential Macau Chinese Educators Association, made the suggestion on the sidelines of an outdoor forum in Iao Hon held by local think tank Macau Wisdom Convergence Network which discussed the Macau Basic Law and local education.
Chan, a vice-principal of Hou Kong Middle School, was one of the panelists at the forum.
She also said that her association had been providing local schools with reference material for teachers to teach Macau Basic Law classes.
Usually, only secondary schools pupils attend Macau Basic Law classes.
“Local schools are now putting more resources into teaching the Basic Law…,however I think to assist schoolchildren in understanding the articles of the law the teaching material should be less dry and taught in a more lively way so as not to bore the children,” Chan was quoted by The Macau Post Daily as saying.
She added that she has noticed there are now some Macau Basic Law comics and more diverse activities promoting the city’s highest law, and she thought there should be more of this kind of “lively” material for teachers to use in the classroom.
Meanwhile, addressing yesterday’s event at Tap Seac Square to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the promulgation of the Macau Basic Law, lawmaker-cum-businessman Chui Sai Cheong, who heads the Macau Basic Law Promotion Association, urged locals to obtain a better understanding of the law.
The event was co-hosted by the government and the Macau Basic Law Promotion Association.
About a hundred residents attended the event which had several stands providing games so that participants could improve their knowledge of the law in a “more lively” way.(macaunews)
