Macau, CHina, 11 Aug – Macau’s population – comprising residents and non-local workers – reached 558,100 at the end of the second quarter, the highest number on record, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Wednesday.

The previous population record stood at 557,330, at the end of the third quarter of 2008.

At the end of June, the population was up 2.5 percent year-on-year. Quarter-to-quarter, the population increased by 1,300 people.

The number of non-local workers, popularly known as blue-card holders, stood at 85,273 at the end of the second quarter, up by 3,857 workers from the end of the first quarter.

Non-local workers accounted for 15.3 percent of the total population at the end of June.

Based on Macau ’s land area of just 29.5 square kilometres, the city’s population density stood at 18,919 inhabitants per square kilometre at the end of the second quarter, according to The Macau Post Daily today.

Macau’s land area has dramatically increased since the early 20th century. The territory’s land area stood at just 11.6 square kilometres in 1912, when official measurements were first taken, while its population amounted to around 80,000, according to historical records.(MacauNews/ Politics)
