Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) Director Susana Wong Soi Man said Sunday that the government has introduced new guidelines on the cleaning of water systems in residential buildings.

Wong also said her bureau tries to convince residents in public housing estates to follow the guidelines first, then introduce them to commercial and public buildings before private housing.

Wong spoke to reporters at a public event yesterday in Iao Hon, saying the bureau will introduce the guidelines gradually and believes it would take about six months before the bureau could introduce the guidelines to commercial buildings.

The guidelines suggest that a building’s water system should be cleaned every six months to prevent the water pipes from getting blocked up.

“There are lots of commercial buildings in Macau and they are managed by large management companies. We will talk to them and provide training courses to teach their staff how to clean the water tanks at the end of the year,” she said. “We feel that through these measures, people will put what is said in the guidelines to use and in the end, they will be introduced to private housing.”

In addition, asked by reporters about the renovation of the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, Wong said that the project is delayed because the government needs to test its new features. Wong said she expected the project to be completed by the end of the year. Wong added that a luggage carousel has been installed in the terminal and is slated to be in use next month, pointing out that it is one of the renovation’s most important features.(macaunews/macaupost)
