Chief government spokesperson Alexis Tam Chon Weng said Sunday there were some government officials who needed to improve their job performance.

He also said that mutual trust between the general public and the government was vital, saying that any lack of it would mean that it is difficult for the government to get things done.

Tam made the remarks before leaving a ceremony held by lawmakers Mak Soi Kun and Zheng Anting to open their new office in Areia Preta, where he commented on the challenges that the cabinet of Chief Executive Chui Sai On’s second term may face.

Chui is set to be re-elected by a 400-member election committee on August 31. He’s the only candidate.

“I feel that Mr. Chui is hard-working and has done a good job. Of course, there are some officials who have not performed very well in some aspects of their jobs, but I believe that people should give them confidence, and I hope that my colleagues will continue to work hard,” said Tam.

He also said that his office often receives petition letters and meets local organisations over various social and political issues.

Tam also heads Chui’s office where he handles a raft of different tasks such as Macau’s relations with Taiwan, Guangdong and Portugal.

Asked by reporters if there is a possibility that he will be appointed one of the government’s policy secretaries, Tam said he was not in a position to comment, simply saying it would be up to his superior to decide.(macauhub/macaupost)
