President Xi Jinping Friday called on Chief Executive Chui Sai On to make renewed efforts for Macau’s development.
The Macau Special Administrative Region’s (MSAR) fourth-term chief executive and government will be sworn in this morning after Chui, 57, was reelected chief executive by a 400-member committee on August 31. Xi will administer the swearing-in.
“The central government fully recognizes your leading role in bringing about new changes and attaining new achievements in the MSAR over the past five years,” Xi told Chui during a meeting at the New Bamboo Guesthouse on Penha Hill held shortly after he arrived here for celebrations marking the 15th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
“The central government pins high hopes on the new MSAR government,” he said, encouraging Chui to unite and lead his whole team to correctly understand and implement the central government’s guidelines and policies toward Macau.
“The central government fully supports you and the work of the MSAR government,” he told Chui.
The central government attaches great importance to the chief executive’s requests for support, having decided to launch relevant work in demarcating the maritime zones of the MSAR, Xi said.
The central government has also decided to confer a pair of giant pandas to Macau, Xi said, adding, “I wish they will grow up healthily and bring happiness to Macau people.”
Chui thanked Xi and the central government for its care and support to him and the MSAR, saying his team will continue to focus on developing the economy, improving people’s livelihood, and actively pursue proper diversification of the economy.
He pledged more efforts to achieve sustainable development and maintain long-term prosperity and stability in Macau.
Xi Jinping Friday also met Edmund Ho Hau Wah, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and first chief executive of the MSAR.
Xi praised Ho’s unswerving contribution to Macau’s development, who has been actively supporting the work of Chui and the local government after his second five-year term ended in 2009.
Xi said he hoped that Ho could continue to give advice to the central and local governments on major issues concerning Macau’s long-term development and lasting stability.
Ho, who became the first chief executive of the MSAR in 1999 when China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macau and won the election for a second term in 2004, expressed thanks for the president’s encouragement.
Ho said Macau’s successful development in the past 15 years had made him truly believe that the motherland is a strong support of Macau´s
