That’s according to a survey by Time Out, which worked out its rankings by asking people from around the world how easy it was to traverse their cities on foot
  • Macao did not make the top 20, despite its compact size, and its recent listing in ninth place in the Skyscanner list of walkable cities around the world

Hong Kong is being hailed the 10th most walkable city in the world, according to a Time Out survey. The SAR shares this ranking with three others: the mainland Chinese city of Shanghai, Cardiff in Wales, and the French capital Paris.

The top-ranked city was the UAE’s Abu Dhabi, which scored highly for its flat topography, many pedestrian areas, and sweeping views across the Arabian Gulf. Boston, in the US, came in second, with Time Out noting that its main attractions were “all pretty closely packed together” with one of them being a 4-kilometre trail connecting historic sights.

Brighton, in the UK, rounded out the top three most walkable cities thanks to how easy it was to stroll between the seaside party hotspot’s many pubs and bars.

To determine its rankings, Time Out asked 18,500 people in cities all over the world to rate their hometown’s pedestrian-friendliness. High scorers were those with the most “good” and “amazing” responses.

The outlet noted that walkable cities tended to be better places to live for a myriad of reasons, from helping people get their daily steps in and encouraging communities to bond, sparing the environment from car fumes.

Macao did not make Time Out’s top 20, despite earning a slot on SkyScanner’s list of “Top 9 walkable cities in Asia” for having “city limits of less than 10 square kilometres and 517 attractions.” Macao was number 9 on the Skyscanner list, and the only city in China to feature.
