The Guangdong provincial government has announced plans to build a new large-scale cultural and sporting complex in Hengqin, according to several media reports.

The proposed construction area is located north of Hengqin Avenue, south of Xiangjiang Road, and east of Zhiyin Nan Road, adjacent to the Hengqin International Tennis Centre, with a total land area of approximately 261,000 square metres.

Officials say the cultural and sporting complex will address a lack of indoor, cultural and public sports facilities in the area.

The project’s scope includes a public fitness centre, a sports arena, commercial facilities, a cultural and performing arts complex, a riverside beach sports park, and a swimming pool.

The public fitness centre will be designed as a multi-functional sports space across multiple floors, enabling regular indoor sports activities such as badminton, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, squash, ice sports, archery, and bowling. It will also be capable of hosting various small to medium-sized public sports events.

The initiative aims to improve public service standards and meet the recreational needs of Hengqin and Macao residents. This aligns with Hengqin’s 10-year development plan, in which the island aims to create “10-minute living circles” that make public services and facilities reachable by a 10-minute walk across 90 percent of its residential land within the next decade.
