Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has said that Macao will further strengthen cooperation through the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin on scientific and technological innovation.

In addition, Ho said, the government is committed to boosting scientific and technological innovation, to enhance the quality of its services and to advance people’s livelihoods and the economy.

Ho was speaking in Guangzhou at the 2021 China Internet Media Forum, which is jointly organised by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the China Media Group and Guangdong’s cyberspace affairs commission.

Ho underlined that the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, calls for the development of a big data centre and an international innovation and technology hub.

He said his government’s aim is to achieve sustainable development of science, technology and innovation, encourage enterprises to make greater use of technology in business operations and to upgrade their technology, and to ensure that Macao explores a market-orientated industry-academia-research model.

The chief executive also called for a lawful, orderly approach towards online resources. With the growing influence of the online media has come the need to stress their social responsibility and their need to act in a moral and legal way, rather than to focus merely on their own economic benefits, Ho said.

Ho also said that the Macao government will formulate a framework policy concerning online safety, in line with the city’s overall development direction and practical needs. He said this was to promote wider community participation in maintaining online safety, and to raise the level of Macao’s overall online safety, The Macau Post Daily reported.
