Following a terrific pounding from heavy wind and rain yesterday, Macao is in for more wet weather in the next couple of days.
The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced that while a trough of low pressure continues to affect Macao, the city will be hit by showers today and tomorrow including the possibility of torrential rain with squally thunderstorms.
The bureau issued a thunderstorm warning and special weather reminder early yesterday morning, and later hoisted Yellow and Red rainstorm warnings.
Due to the severe weather conditions, all afternoon classes for kindergarten, primary and secondary schools were suspended yesterday under the Red rainstorm warning, according to the Education and Youth Development Bureau.
As of 4 pm yesterday, the Macao peninsula recorded 182.8 millimetres of precipitation, while accumulations of 234.8 millimetres and 184.4 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in Taipa and Coloane.
The bureau urged residents to be wary of possible floods and landslides caused by rainstorms, and also pay close attention to the observatory’s announcements and warnings.
As a result of the heavy rain parts of Macao including Cotai and Barra suffered flooding yesterday.
The Municipal Affairs Bureau said staff were sent to the affected areas to remove rubbish from the drainage systems, The Macau Post Daily reported.
