Macau population reaches 658,900 in June

Macau’s population reached 658,900 as at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 2,200 from the previous quarter, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

Macau’s population reached 658,900 as at the end of the second quarter, an increase of 2,200 from the previous quarter, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

Year on year, the special administrative region’s population – comprising residents and non-resident workers – was up by 10,500, or 1.6 percent.

Based on Macau’s land area of 30.8 square kilometres, its population density reached 21,392 per square kilometre in June, the world’s highest, according to the Guinness World Records.

The bureau’s latest demographics report issued on Friday showed that the female population (349,600) accounted for 53.1 percent of the total. A total of 998 marriages were registered in the second quarter, down by 139 quarter on quarter.

A total of 1,441 live births were delivered in the second quarter, an increase of 27 quarter on quarter. Male newborns totalled 758. The sex ratio at birth stood at 111, corresponding to 111 male per 100 female babies.

A total of 473 deaths were recorded in the second quarter, down by 49 from the previous quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were cancer (183), diseases of the circulatory system (119) and diseases of the respiratory system (61).

In the second quarter, the number of immigrants from the mainland (774) decreased by 233 quarter on quarter. Individuals granted the right of abode (315) and the number of non-resident workers at the end of the second quarter (181,499) increased quarter on quarter by 42 and 154 respectively.
