Almost two-thirds of people in Macao have done no exercise in the last three months, according to a survey by the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations.

In a poll of 1,092 residents, cited in the Macau Post Daily, the organisation found that just 36.6 percent had exercised between December 2022 and March this year.

Union officials said the figure had almost halved since the last survey. They urged the Macao government to promote exercise to improve the physical health of the community.

Macao’s health and fitness sector was battered by zero-Covid restrictions during the pandemic. While some see an opportunity as the territory emerges from social curbs, recovery is likely to remain uneven.

A 2017 Health Bureau survey found that more than 30 percent of people in Macao were overweight, with nearly 35 percent consuming excessive amounts of red meats and almost 40 percent consuming an excessive amount of salt.
