One more of Macau’s 45 COVID-19 patients was discharged from hospital today, leaving just 28 patients still hospitalised, according to the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre.

The 19-year-old local male student – the 19th confirmed COVID-19 case – who returned to Macau from New York via Hong Kong after visiting Mexico, was today transferred from the isolation war of the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital to the Public Health Clinical Centre in Coloane for 14 days of quarantine and medical observation, Alvis Lo Iek Long, a senior physician at the public hospital, said.

The teen, who studies in the US, returned to Macau with his 50-year-old mother – the 18th confirmed COVID-19 case – from New York. The woman, who has been classified by the Health Bureau (SSM) as the only serious case among Macau’s novel coronavirus disease patients, is still recovering in hospital.

Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22. Almost all of the 45 cases have been classified by the Health Bureau as imported, many of them local students who returned from overseas. Unlike Hong Kong, Macau has been spared a community outbreak of the highly infectious disease. No one has died of the disease in Macau, which has not recorded a new case of the disease for nine days.

The local government has imposed strict entry restrictions to prevent the disease from spreading in Macau. Almost all pedestrians in Macau are wearing facemasks, which are mandatory to enter public administration buildings and casinos, as well as on public transport including taxis.

The government also has launched a string of measures for Macau’s badly affected economy such as 8,000 pataca (US$1,002) consumption subsidy smartcards and for all residents.
