Macao yesterday marked the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in World War II (also called the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War) with live streams of the commemorative events at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

The broadcast included a spectacular 70-minute military parade and a speech by President Xi Jinping, who highlighted China’s sacrifices for and contributions to global peace. Xi called on nations to “eliminate the root cause of war and prevent historical tragedies from recurring.”

The live streams took place at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the University of Macau (UM), as well as at schools and other institutions.

According to a government statement, they “enabled the Macao public to join hands in the country’s commitment to remembering history, honouring martyrs, cherishing peace, and forging the future.”

At the MPU session, the university’s acting chief executive Cheong Weng Chon paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the war, recalling Macao’s contributions through fundraising, material support, and volunteer efforts.

He said the victory, achieved over 14 years of struggle, reflected the courage and spirit of the Chinese nation, and laid the foundation for China’s post-war development and global standing.
