Macao will experience showers and thunderstorms this weekend, according to a dispatch released today by the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (also known by its Portuguese acronym SMG).
The bureau explained that a convective cloud cluster had developed into a low pressure area and is expected to reach the vicinity of the South China coast over the next day or two. “If the low pressure area further intensifies into a tropical cyclone, winds in Macao will increase rapidly,” the weather forecaster said.
The bureau said it was assessing the possibility of issuing a tropical cyclone signal. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Observatory has stated it may issue a typhoon signal No. 1 today.

The SMG expects the wind level to be especially strong on Friday and Saturday, with showers and thunderstorms continuing until over the subsequent days before abating from next Tuesday onwards.
Macao and the rest of the Greater Bay Area have been hit by heavy rainfall and extreme weather in recent weeks, including a bout of hail in late April, the first official record of the phenomenon in 13 years.
A report released by the SMG earlier this month indicated that 10 storm signals had been issued from 1 January to 15 May this year, which was more than double the figure that was recorded over the same period in 2023.
