More than 500 prospective buyers had submitted an application to purchase a residential unit at the Macau New Neighbourhood (MNN) development in Hengqin as of 3:00 pm yesterday, the government-owned developer of the project announced.

Sales of the flats began yesterday morning and were “met with great enthusiasm,” according to Macau Urban Renewal (MUR) Limited.

Local legislator Leong Hong Sai told local media that the authorities should make vehicular travel between Macao and Hengqin – a southern district of Zhuhai – more convenient, given the development’s popularity.

A potential buyer surnamed Lo told Macao Daily that the development was “the same as living in Macao.” Other interviewees said they were drawn to the apartments due to their comparative affordability as well as the fact that the on-site school would follow Macao’s education system.

Applicants are able to lodge their applications online or in person via the sales centre, with an initial deposit of 100,000 yuan required.

The MNN consists of 4,279 flats in 27 residential towers with 19 to 26 floors each. Some 80 percent of the flats are two-bedroom units that have a price range between 2.41 to 2.63 million yuan. Three bedroom apartments, which cost between 3.53 to 3.71 million yuan, make up the remaining 20 percent of flats.

The Macau New Neighbourhood units are available for purchase by adult Macao residents who own only one property in Macao and no other residential units in Zhuhai.
