Fireworks that were scheduled to take place tomorrow night as a part of the 31st Macao International Fireworks Display Contest have been cancelled with the approach of Typhoon Koinu.

Arts performances and a night market, scheduled for tonight at the Rua da Felicidade, have also been scrapped, while Mid-Autumn Festival-themed lighting displays at Mount Fortress will be taken down.

Neighbouring Hong Kong is meanwhile battening down the hatches and has cancelled two high-profile night markets due to take place along its waterfront.

At 2:00 pm, Typhoon Koinu was located some 360 kilometres east of Macao and is forecast to continue its westward track toward the coast of Guangdong and the Pearl River Estuary.

Typhoon signal no. 1 is currently in force. The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) says there is a “relatively high” probability of a no. 3 signal being issued during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Wet weather is predicted for the weekend, along with strong northerly winds, but the SMG says the chance of a storm surge warning is low.

Macao was last impacted by typhoons in late August and early September, when Soala and Haikui caused significant flooding.
